What to Wear for a Photo Session? / by Leticia Gaidon Bradford

Many times, my clients are in doubts about what to wear during a photo session. Therefore, I always guide them about this subject, and we work together with their existing wardrobe.

There are some basic pieces that are my “go to” for my photoshoots which provide a classic look as well as a timeless image.

A Portrait with Shirts or Blouses

Personally, I tend to create a sort of calm and solid image. Saying that, in shirts I see better results when they have solid colours or soft patterns. If we need to add interest to this item, we always can require the help of a necklace or earrings. Moreover, choosing a blouse with some volume or textures to make a statement always give an extra interest to the picture.

Nowadays, one of the most common mistakes that I can see in photographs, it is people wearing very tight shirts. If the buttons can’t close properly in your torso or the shirt looks short when you cross your arms, don’t bring it to the session. Otherwise, it looks like you had a problem setting the temperature of your washing machine.

Turtleneck in Photoshoots

Turtleneck is classic and goes perfectly for women and men. You can wear it with a jacket, coat or alone. All these items are easy to combine. Having them will provide you three perfect styles for your images.

Jumpers for your Portraits

Maybe because it is so common in our daily routine, clients don’t consider this outfit for a photo session and looks good in pictures. Depending on your style you can choose a plain or cable knit jumpers for a casual/relax look or with some textures like appliques or broches to level up your look. See the pictures below to inspire you.

Upgrade your Photo Wearing Clothes with Textures

Lace and tulle are very present in my images because I am attracted to the delicate appearance and the interest that those materials bring to portraits.

Think about other alternatives to make your photos more interesting.

Sequin, a Classic in my Photo Sessions

I am not a minimalist person, but I am a zen one in my style -not with my personality, which is bubbly and funny-. Now, you are wondering why I mentioned this? Well, the opposite to zen it is glam and accordingly with the book “Styled: Secrets for Arranging Rooms, from Tabletops to Bookshelves by Emily Henderson, when you decorate a room, the rule is combined opposites together. Did you know that? Me neither, but that explains a lot about my taste. The reason for my love for sequin is there and it truly looks amazing in pictures.
