Beyond my work, the last couple of weeks have been filled with family time and a little bit of socialising. Today my daughter is back to school, but during the holidays we enjoyed fun days together, trying new recipes (including a slightly broken coconut flan! 🍮, baking treats that turned out unbroken 😜, getting the piercings she’d been wanting for since Christmas, and discovering some lovely local cafés. ⭐There’s No Single ‘Real You’ in Portraits⭐ Peter Lindbergh, the famous fashion photographer and “father of the supermodels” in the 90s, didn’t like when people said to him: “You capture how this person really is.” He believed this was incorrect because humans are far too complex to be reduced to just one version of themselves. When I heard Lindbergh say this, I felt relieved because I shared the same opinion, and fortunately, his reputation validated this different way of seeing people. 🔍In my view, portraits reveal different layers of who we are. Sometimes, you’re photographed the way your closest friends and family see you. It feels familiar and relaxed, almost like taking a selfie with a friend. Think of those moments when you’re a guest at a wedding and someone takes your picture. Then there’s the more formal layer, like a headshot session. It might feel less natural or even uncomfortable, and you might delay it if you can. Yet, this version will feel instantly familiar to your colleagues, as it represents the professional role they know you in. And then there’s a deeper layer, a version of you that perhaps hasn’t surfaced yet. When captured, it might even surprise you, and those who know you may not immediately recognise it. But it’s still you. That’s why there isn’t a single, “real” you in portraits.
